There is always a silver lining to things...This whole prop 8 thing has really shined a light on a law that quite often is completely ignored.
Here is the law: to qualify for tax exempt status as a 501c group:
"Corporations organized and operated exclusively for religious purposes have no substantial part of the activities of which is carrying on propaganda, or otherwise attempting, to influence legislation."
Dobson's Focus on the Family Donated $800,000 to prop 8. Was it not to influence the results of the legislation?
The Mormon Church basically told their members they would burn in Hell if they did not donate to 8. One couple of middle class means gave $50,000 of their savings. The Mormon church gave 80% of the money raised for prop 8. About 20 million dollars. What recession? People hurting? Losing their homes? Taking kids out of day care? But they some how whipped up $20,000,000 to sure that gay people in another state lost an existing right because marriage needs to be "protected" from the gays.
Click on this link and please fill out this petition to the IRS to revoke the Mormon churches tax exempt status. They most certainly are using their organization to influence legislation and without them prop 8 would never have passed. If they want to be political so be it but then they have to pay taxes.
