Pedophilia (sometimes referred to as pederasty). These terms as a category refer to adult sexual encounters with children. Pedophilia as a diagnosis refers to one of many pedophiles which, unlike homosexuality, are pathological diagnoses of mental disorders characterized by abnormalities of intention, meaning varying degrees of selfish disregard for the well being (possible destructive effects) on the partner instead of respect and mutually acceptable cooperation for mutual pleasure (incest, sexual sadism, etc.).

A pedophile is someone whose sexual orientation is for children, usually with little or no interest in adults. When used as an adjective, "pedophile behavior" may not refer to a pathological pedophile but to adult-child sexual abuse by a heterosexual or a homosexual person who does not meet the severity diagnostic criteria of fixated pedophilia. A small and about equal percentage of both heterosexual and homosexual persons (non-pedophiles) engage in occasional same-sex child molestation which means in absolute numbers there are many more heterosexual than homosexual child molesters.

It follows that conflation of pedophilia or any undesignated same-sex child molestation with homosexuality, whether intentional or not, unjustly stigmatizes homosexual persons. Members of disliked minority groups are often stereotyped as representing a danger to the majority society's most vulnerable members. Historically, Black men in the United States were often falsely accused of raping White women, and commonly lynched as a result. Jews in the Middle Ages were accused of murdering Christian babies in ritual sacrifices.

A huge problem related to terminology arises because sexual abuse of male children by adult men² is often referred to as "homosexual molestation." The adjective "homosexual" (or "heterosexual" when a man abuses a female child) refers to the victim's gender in relation to that of the perpetrator. Special rights for gays on the rise, but traditional marriage gets new protection, too.

With the new year has come a raft of new laws -- a mixed bag for family advocates as laws guaranteeing special rights for homosexuals are in vogue, even while the defense of marriage movement remains strong.

California leads the way with some of the most liberal laws to hit the books in 2007. Barbara McPherson, legislative affairs coordinator of the California Family Council, told Family News in Focus her state has expanded its definition of gay-hiring rights.

"Faith-based organizations could be included in that mix," she said, "and that means that they could actually have complaints filed against them and fines and removal of state funding."

But not every new law in the Golden State is regrettable.

"There's a wonderful bill," she noted, "which requires more sex-offender registration, which prohibits sex offenders from hiring minor children." See how they tie sex offenders to gays..

In other good news, Brad Miller, director of family policy councils for Focus on the Family Action, said many states are enacting marriage protections this year -- and that's not all.

"Another area of success is in the area of restricting sexually oriented businesses," he said. "We're seeing great success in that area on the local level."

That said, several states are starting bond measures for embryonic stem-cell research funding.

"This is a trend, and it's an unfortunate trend," Miller said. "Numerous other states are looking at and will probably force this issue in the next legislative session."

Reacting to an Indiana appellate court ruling last month that cleared same-sex couples to adopt children, a state senator is preparing to introduce legislation that will override the court's decision. He plans to fashion the bill after Florida's ban against same-sex adoptions. That law, enacted in 1977, was upheld in 2004 by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal.

Drozda called the Florida law a "good public policy decision" that is "in the best interest of children."

One of the most frustrating aspects of the struggle for equal rights for gay and lesbian Americans is the strength of enduring untruths, particularly those knowingly perpetuated by our opponents.

And perhaps the most maddening of these falsehoods suggests that gay men present a special danger to children.

Conservative Christian organizations shamelessly promote this deception. The Family Research Council's website offers the 31-page report "Homosexual Activists Work to Normalize Sex With Boys."[1] Until recently, the American Family Association's site presented "Homosexuality and Child Molestation: The Link, the Likelihood, the Lasting Effects."[2]

Still not quite sure that gay men molest kids? Contact Focus on the Family and purchase "Setting the Record Straight," which alleges that a child molester is 17 times more likely to be gay than straight.[3]

The moral lawlessness of repeating this untruth is all the more egregious because its falsity has been known for over 20 years.

In 1978 psychologist Nicholas Groth screened 175 men who had been convicted in Massachusetts of sexual molestation of children and referred by a court for psychological evaluation. He found not a single gay man in this sample. Every one of the perpetrators was either an exclusive heterosexual, a bisexual with a predominantly heterosexual orientation, or a fixated pedophile with no sexual interest in adults.[4]

His conclusion? That "the adult heterosexual male constitutes a greater risk to the underage child than does the adult homosexual male."

In the same year, researcher David Newton reviewed the scientific literature and found no reason to believe that anything other than a "random connection" existed between homosexual orientation and child molestation.[5]

Later research has confirmed these findings:

Child abuse, including sexual abuse, is a terrible reality in this country. According to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System, established by the federal Department of Health and Human Services, nearly 90,000 children are sexually abused every year.[9] According to some researchers, the true number may be five times this.[10]

Approximately 80 percent of these sexually molested children are girls.[11] Persons focusing only on the remaining 20 percent of molestations--and, even then, only on the small fraction of these crimes committed by gay men--are not authentically concerned with combating sexual abuse of children. Their primary interest lies in perpetuating fear.

The source of the right's statistics linking gay men with child molestation is discredited psychologist Paul Cameron, who operates the Family Research Institute in Colorado Springs, Colorado.[12] Cameron is responsible for many of the right's most bizarre allegations about gays and lesbians, such as that gays constitute 44 percent of sexual mass murderers, that two-thirds of gay men "ingest biologically significant amounts of feces," and that being a gay male takes 30 years off one's life.[13]

But Cameron is hardly a credible source. He was dropped from the American Psychological Association back in 1983 for a violation of its Ethical Principles of Psychologists.[14] And he's been censured by four other professional associations and a federal court.[15]

We get often caught in a semantic conflict when discussing the sexual abuse and molestation of children. Depending upon our exact definitions of terms, it can be shown:

If we define the phrase "homosexual abuse of children" in the first statement to mean adults molesting and abusing children of the same sex, then this statement is true: Child sexual abuse is widespread. It is perpetrated by males in the vast majority of cases. And a substantial minority of their victims are boys.

But it is not homosexuals, as the term is generally understood, who are responsible for the abuse. It is rather pedophiles who are attracted to children, and have decided to abuse them.

However, if we define the phrase "abuse of boys by gays", and "abuse of girls by lesbians" to mean adult persons with a homosexual orientation abusing children of the same sex, then these statements 2 and 3 above are also true. Gays and lesbians rarely abuse children.

The fact behind these conflicting statements is that most pedophiles are not homosexuals! Or to put it another way, most homosexual molestation is not done by homosexuals.
