lesbain asking court to ban gay adoption
3/25/07
This story shows exactly why gay marriage or unions can not be banned. This next story shows the legal discrimination that gays face.
You read the title correct. Today 3/25/07 there is a lesbian out there that is asking the courts to ban gay adoption. Why you ask? Miss thing has a little vendetta against her ex and has decided to make the entire gay community suffer for it. Sara Wheeler met Missy one day and fell in love. They wanted to be together forever and Missy even changed her last name to Wheeler. They decided to bring a child into the world so Sara was artificially inseminated. Missy legally adopted the child so that both could be legal parents. In their hearts and home they were both the parents and Missy formed an unbreakable mother-son bond like any normal human would. For a short time....they were the perfect family.....
What happens next demonstrates to a tee the evils that gay Americans face everyday. One day Sara and Missy had a fight. It was a terrible fight and they decided to call the relationship off. So what happens next? If it were a man and a women who were married then they get a divorce and both get custody of the child. But because they are two women and our society judges their relationship, the laws are not the same for them. Joint custody is not as automatic as it would be for heterosexuals. Now the "biological" mother has the "upper hand."
Even though before the child existed both of them decided to give this child life. Both of them sat down and decided, "let's bring a new life into the world to call our own." "Let's raise a child together." Obviously both of them can't give birth to the same child so in every lesbian relationship that wants children they have to decide which one will give birth. When they decide this, in no way shape or form, is it "understood" that the baby is "the biological mother's only and "if we break up I keep it." They are having it together. They are raising it together. They will both form a mother-child bond. When they decided to have this baby Sara did not say to Missy, "But if we break up, the baby is mine....."
So they break up. Now because of our judgmental, discriminatory society the parents are not on equal footing. Even though both wanted the child. Both raised the child. Missy formed just a strong bond as Sara. Every women out there that adopts a child would be devastated if someone tried to take that child away. Now guaranteed, we will to see James Dobson and the religious right swoop down on this couple and use them to try and argue against gay adoption.
The reality is that this case shows exactly why gays need equal rights and protections. Everyone in America voting for these state amendments against gay legal unions needs to put themselves in Missy's shoes. Even though she legally adopted this child and is the co-parent there will be legal issues with her getting parental visitation. It would not be the same if she were a man. It is cut and dry discrimination to Missy Wheeler.
We can not give one parent more say or more rights with a child just because they are the biological parent. These women decided to bring this life here together. Both are the mother. What Sara is doing to Missy is disgusting. It is the lowest of the low. She wants to hurt her and is using our unfair laws to achieve it. She spits in the face of every gay American especially in these trying times. Because of her little vendetta with Missy she is willing to screw over 6-10% of the American population. I can not think of anyone more selfish in the world. Hopefully, the whole thing will shed light on why gays need rights. It is for people like Missy Wheeler that will have to endure the heart break and terror of not knowing if she will ever see her legally adopted son again.
Everyone needs to "walk a mile" in Missy's shoes. Now you can all see one of over 1000 problems that gays have to face. This is what the state amendments do. We need laws that put both parents on equal footing. A child should not be used to "get someone back."
