Paul Cameron of the quack science group "Family Research Institute" for having fake research studies that do not follow establish scientific guidelines and then selling his results as "valid." He is a disgrace to science, was banned from his profession, and could arguably be the most anti-gay homophobe in the world.
James Dobson and Joseph Nicolasi of Narth actually found a "researcher" with as strong an anti-gay prejudice as them. And the 30 year era of bogus research and misleading anti-gay studies was born. In the mid-1980s, the gay press labeled Paul Cameron "the most dangerous antigay voice in the United States today." Once quoted as saying "Homosexuals should be branded in the face as to be easily recognized".
Some important facts about Mr. Cameron:
Almost all of the research that is referenced that is anti-gay is based on bogus research from Paul Cameron. His research, which was not obtained in a professional or scientific manor has been used to deny gay Americans over 1000 rights that straight Americans automatically receive time and time again. He is a discredited psychologist and the laughing stock of the scientific community. He was kicked out of his professional association for "fixing his results" to make his scientific studies show what he wanted them to show. He is so anti-gay that the Family Research Institute is considered a "Hate Group." Paul Cameron thinks gays should be "branded on he face to be easily recognized."
Cameron is about as far from a credible source as you can get. He was dropped from the American Psychological Association back in 1983 for a violation of its Ethical Principles of Psychologists. And he's been censured by four other professional associations and a federal court. Cameron's bogus "studies" make bizarre claims about gays and lesbians that are almost to crazy to believe that someone would even design a study to test it. He claims that gays constitute 44 percent of sexual mass murderers, that two-thirds of gay men "ingest biologically significant amounts of feces," and that being a gay male takes 30 years off one's life. Where on Earth does he dream this stuff up? Talk about issues......
Pedophilia
One study involved 175 male adults who had been convicted in Massachusetts of child sexual assault. They found that none of them were homosexuals; all of them would fit the description of a fixated child molester. They were sexually attracted only to children and not to other adults.2 Another researcher studied sexually abused children seen in a hospital. Only 2 perpetrators (less than 1% of the total) were homosexuals (i.e. were attracted to same-sex adults).
The Massachusetts study includes a reference to a survey of literature of child sexual abuse by Paul Cameron in 1985. Cameron's conclusion was quite different. He concluded that (on a per-capita basis) homosexuals were more liable to abuse children than bisexuals, and that bisexuals were more apt to abuse than heterosexuals. The fatal flaw in this survey was that the articles that Cameron studied assumed that in any case where a male adult abused a male child, then the perpetrator was, by his definition, a homosexual. This is to bad because in the reputable scientific communities they know that there are rules concerning labeling a child molester. The molesters sexuality is different because he is not attracted to adults. They usually use the term fixated child molester. Their sexuality is abnormal and they become fixated on children usually not caring about the sex. Pedophiles do not have a sexuality because the do not have sexual attraction to adults. If his logic were to be followed than almost all child molesters would be heterosexual because so many more molestations happen to female children by male adults.
Professional associations that are disgusted with Paul Cameron and his blatant disregard for honest science where the results are actually not known before the study even begins. Studies that do not involve a personal agenda completely molding the results.
1. In 1982, the Nebraska Psychological Association deplored the "misleading and untrue statements about psychological research on homosexuality" circulated by Cameron. (Minutes of the NPA's spring business meeting on April 17, 1982, at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Copy in the possession of the author.)
2. In 1985, both the Midwest Sociological Society (Minutes of the second meeting of the 1985-1986 board of directors for the MSS, held on Oct. 11-12, 1985 in Des Moines, Iowa. Copy in the possession of the author.) and the Society for the Study of Social Problems (Minutes of the 1985 SSSP annual meeting on Aug. 25, 1985 in Washington, D.C. Copy in the possession of the author.) declared that Cameron had "consistently misinterpreted and misrepresented" sociological research.
3. In 1986, the American Sociological Association condemned Cameron's "consistent misrepresentation of sociological research." (Memo from ASA Executive Officer William D'Antonio to state and regional associations. Copy in the possession of the author.)
4. Federal court:
In Baker v. Wade, 106 F.R.D. 526 (1985), the judge stated that Cameron "made misrepresentations" before the court.
These associations use the terms "misrepresentations", "misleading", "untrue", "misinterpreted" to make the charge seem not as severe as "lying" or "falsifying information". If it walks like a duck and "quacks" like a duck then call a spade a spade and label Paul what he is: an unethical, lying, quack with a personal grudge against gay Americans. Isn't one of the commandments from God not to bare false witness against your neighbor? Paul has done a great injustice to his fellow American citizens by purposely falsifying information on several profession scientific studies for the sole purpose to paint gays as evil human beings that molest children and are a problem for society that should be dealt with. Through the past 30 years, our legislators have used these biased, tainted, wrong results of Paul Cameron's research, in order to justify their own prejudiced anti-gay record of legislation. Right now in 2006, his research is still being referenced in decisions on the rights for gays to adopt, rights concerning gays in the work place, housing, all basic rights where the only people in the country that are still not protected are gay Americans.

In one of Paul's "studies" he claims "that being a gay man takes 30 years off your life." He got these crazy results falsely because he did not collect a proper representation of the group he was studying. If you make a statement about the age of gay men dying then you need to sample a variety of gay men. What did Paul do? He used the average age of gay males from the obituaries in gay magazines to state that the average gay male lives to be 40. This during the height of the aids crisis. Are you kidding me? This man thinks he is a scientist? That would be like taking a sample of people from a bar in the middle of a sunny afternoon and deciding that 90% of all people are alcoholics. In research methods 101 the first thing that you learn is to take a sample that represents the entire community that is being studied. It is called a "cross section". He needed to get death records from hospitals and nursing homes as well.
What he did would be like concluding that all Americans are at healthy weight when you have only been studied los Angeles.
Cameron's false results are frequently used by prejudiced senators and representatives to decide votes for very serious issues concerning basic civil rights. They should be embarrassed. To make such important decisions, that effect real people's lives in a negative way, based on tainted conclusions of a known hack that falsifies his results. Do they have a tenth of a conscience?
Here is an example of the ignorance at our highest levels of government. There is a state representative from Tennessee her name is Debra Maggart. This year the press found an email from her stating that she had seen "evidence" that:
1. Homosexuals could not maintain a stable relationship, and that gay couples often sought young men to adopt for, apparently, "unfretted access to subject them to a life of molestation and sexual abuse."
2. Homosexual couples prey on young males.
3. "Some of the evidence we were presented showed that lesbian and gay couples have a higher rate of breaking up than heterosexual coupes as well as higher rates of promiscuity outside of their relationships."
That "evidence" was apparently presented to a legislative same-sex parenting study committee, which according to Maggart, met last summer when "we met and heard testimony from researchers on both sides of this issue." Rep. Maggart said "the State Director, Hedy Weinburg of the ACLU and a representative from Focus on the Family," presented information at that study committee.
So this state representative is going to use "Focus on the Family" as an unbiased consult about gay parenting? Focus on the Family? The anti-gay group that sent out a 10 page paper full of lies to 2.5 million people on how "homosexuals have at the center piece of their master plan the "utter destruction of the family". Focus on the Family who employs disgraced researcher, Paul Cameron, in spite of his fraudulent research methods which do have a "master plan" to perpetuate the destructive lies surrounding homosexuality? Focus on the family who is run by James Dobson (arguably the most anti-gay human on the planet) who has once said, I will fight against equal rights for gays until I draw my last breath?
The same James Dobson that just wrote an anti-gay article in Time magazine filled with lies about gays making bad parents? Dobson quoted only 2 researchers in that article and lied about their results to suit his anti-gay agenda. Both researchers immediately wrote to James telling him to never cite their work again. One of the researchers asked him if he remembered that one of the commandments directly from God was not to lie? Miss Debra Maggart believes that Focus on the Family will be fair and honest in the research that they present concerning gay Americans? Would she also consult the Klu Klux Klan to obtain incite about black Americans?
Miss Maggart is either:
a). so clueless that she didn't know how anti-gay Focus on the Family is
or (and this is probably a little closer to reality)
b). she knows and doesn't care.
Either way she needs to resign her seat as a state representative. The United States needs people that are smart and fair in office not people that vote against a citizen being able to adopt a child, a huge vote changing that person's life forever, and she doesn't even review where her research came from, if it is valid and unbiased. Biased, prejudiced people do not present valid science. The day that focus on the family gives an honest opinion that is true regarding gays is the day pigs will fly.

Lately, there is a lot of talk about homosexual marriages, etc. From a health standpoint, the homosexual and lesbian behavior is not a healthy life style and can even result in early death. Our society worries about people wearing seat belts, losing weight, smoking, taking drugs and abusing alcohol. Where is our consistency?

Ok where to begin? The funny thing about the claims they are making? They sounded all to familiar to our staff at http://www.valueallfamilies.com/ That's what happens when you make outrageous claims, like the median age for gay men is 42 and 44 for lesbians. It tends to stick in the memory. Then we remembered reading all of those false claims in a research study. We'll give you one guess who the researcher is. Yep, none other than our favorite disgraced, hack of a quack, Paul Cameron. We also checked into the "swallowing of the feces" comment and guess who the researcher was?
Yup you guessed it. That was also from Mr. "Gays should be branded on the face as to be easily recognized" as well. As a matter of fact, all of the claims listed above are from non-valid, unethical, unscientific research from Mr. "I have a grudge" Paul Cameron. So here we have a United States Representative, whose job it is to protect every American from injustice, making claims that gays eat feces, they don't live long, they cause massive out breaks of disease, and abuse drugs extensively.
He considers gays a risk to their own health just by existing. All claims of course are, completely false, and were actually fabricated by the researcher that is being cited. All based on lies, and fraud from Paul, and then published by the anti-gay hate group who made #8 on our top ten list of all time gay hate-groups "Concerned Women of America". It states on their website that "finding homosexuality repulsive is a natural human instinct". Isn't that special? Could we have the source on that please? I didn't think so.
This state representative is making decisions that will discriminate and negatively impact his fellow American citizens based solely on lies and fraudulent information from a known "hate group" whose only reason for existence is to make Gay Americans lives as hard as possible. Paul Cameron actually fabricated these exact claims that are being passed as scientific results. Do our United States Representatives not have people on staff that review studies that they are using to based their decisions on? They just take outrageous claims like: people eating feces for fun as true without checking the source? They must really have a completely warped view of gays. We understand prejudice and hate based on ignorance of facts when it comes from the average Joe. It is just hard to stomach when it comes from the highest levels of government.
State representatives should above all leave their prejudice baggage at home. The people who vote you in to office do so assuming that you are a fair and decent person. We might not agree with every vote that you cast but we should at least expect that you would not purposely try to make American citizen's lives harder because of unfair and untrue stereotypes and prejudices that surrounds the issue of homosexuality.
Representatives Jim Welker and Debra Maggart have shown that the ignorance surrounding homosexuality is still rampant even at the highest levels of government. This is why we have worked tirelessly on our free time without pay for the past two years. These reps make us realize how much more work we have to do.

Dr. David Grier of Grace Christian Church Misused Social Science and Shamefully Misled His Readers, Said Wayne Besen
WASHINGTON -- Author Wayne Besen today condemned Grace Christian Church in Woodbridge, Va., for divisively vilifying gay people in last week's Washington Post. The attack, which was intended to arouse anti-gay sentiment in the African-American community, came in the form of an advertising insert called "Both Sides Magazine". Besen called on "Both Sides" editor Dr. David Grier to apologize for his politically motivated, scientifically incorrect and mean-spirited attack.
"This is disgraceful propaganda designed to incite anger and contempt by using an inexcusably vicious combination of sensational pictures and bogus scientific claims," said Besen, author of Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth. "Editor Dr. David Grier ought to be ashamed of his wanton manipulation of the facts designed to distort the lives of gay people."
Grier argued that gay people don't deserve equal rights because their "lifestyle" causes them an early death. He arrived at this conclusion by using phony stats that compare the "median age of death for a homosexual man with AIDS" to the "average age of death for a married heterosexual male."
"This is as ridiculous as comparing the average age of death for healthy gay men to the age of death for African-Americans with severe diabetes," said Besen. "Contrasting life spans of healthy people from one group to sick people from another group is beyond absurd."
Sadly, Grier got his information from Dr. Paul Cameron. In 1985, The American Sociological Association adopted a resolution that stated: "Dr. Paul Cameron has consistently misinterpreted sociological research on sexuality, homosexuality and lesbianism."
The insert also contends gay people should not gain equal rights because homosexuality is not immutable, like race. Drier made the silly argument that, "If homosexuality is a genetic trait and homosexuals were true to their orientation, the trait would die in the first generation."
"First, Grier should take Biology 101. Second, the vast majority of gay and straight people would agree that their sexual orientation is deeply ingrained and is not changeable," said Besen. "The American Psychiatric Association says attempts to change sexual orientation can lead to 'anxiety, depression, and self-destructive behavior.'"
Fortunately, most black leaders such as Al Sharpton, Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., Nelson Mandela and Coretta Scott King have been leading voices for gay and lesbian equality.
"For many years now, I have been an outspoken supporter of civil and human rights for gay and lesbian people," Coretta Scott King said at the 25th anniversary luncheon for Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund. "Many of these courageous men and women were fighting for my freedom at a time when they could find few voices for their own, and I salute their contributions."
According to Besen, people like Grier learned all the wrong lessons from the civil rights movement.
"The beauty of the civil rights movement is that it had a universal message that laid down a simple moral principle: 'Caste systems where people are born into second-class citizenship should be abolished', said Besen. "It is a shame that in this day and age some people only believe themselves worthy of dignity, freedom, equality and respect."
Our lawmakers are using his research to decide on adoption laws and partner rights.
